About Us
“The one who plants trees, knowing that he will never sit in their shade, has at least started to understand the meaning of life.” Rabindranath Tagore
Generativity was founded on this principle, also echoed in the work of Erik Erikson, a psychologist who observed that some people are propelled by the desire to give back to future generations — “generativity” — or acquiesce to stagnation.
Generativity is an online literary magazine published out of Columbus, Ohio. Though the magazine’s scope focuses on readers and writers in Ohio, we believe stories connect us across state lines, party lines, genders, and generations, to spark creativity and strengthen communities, in Ohio and beyond.

Mission Statement
Deeply committed to the interdisciplinary nature of the arts, Generativity seeks fiction and non-fiction essays, poems, and visual artwork from ages 8+, across race, age, gender, sex, class, and sexual orientation. In braiding together unique stories and expressions across generations under a common theme, its founders hope to create something so strong it will be like Tagore’s tree and provide community and respite for creatives long after they are gone.
The magazine collaborates with artists and pursues works that engage with family, generational ties, nature and place-based ecology, religion and spirituality, shifting identity, personal and emotional realism, and the evolving concerns and interests of those living in Ohio.

Katie Annarino
Editor-in-Chief, Adult Content
Katie Annarino holds a Master of Fine Arts from Chapman University. She is a lecturer at Otterbein University and The Ohio State University, an advertising and marketing copy lead, and a freelance journalist. She has been published in Columbus Parent, Columbus Monthly, and The Pittsburgh Gazette, and her creative non-fiction has appeared in Valiant Scribe. She is working on a book of nature essays about the remaining old growth forests in the United States. She resides in Columbus, Ohio, with her son, Bodhi, an aspiring writer, and two distinguished felines.
Melissa Burnett
Editor-in-Chief, Youth Content
Melissa Burnett holds a Master’s in Literacy Education and is the author of Grace Needs Space, The Empathy Umbrella, and The Affirmation Station — children’s books that celebrate empathy, self-regulation, and positive affirmations. She is featured in the We Hold These Truths to Be Self Evident anthology and is a contributor to the Columbus Moms blog. She believes imagination is a gift, and sometimes the daydreams we’re told to put away are the very things we’re meant to share. She lives in Worthington, Ohio, with her husband, three children, and two dogs.

Do you have a story about what anchors you and what makes you reach upward? Perhaps a story that explores leaving the familiar — whether it’s a pattern, a place, a person, or a version of yourself. Maybe a series of poems about a comforting family tradition you carry on. Or a piece of visual art that captures helping your grandmother tend her garden, or an essay about the time you watched a migration of birds float and dive as if they were one.
If you’re as inspired by the things that anchor us and the things that help us fly as we are, we want to hear about it. Send us your best writing or visual art that centers on the theme Roots and Wings.

We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts outside this period. We are committed to supporting authors at all stages in their careers. All manuscripts receive serious, careful attention; each submission is read by a published writer.
Work previously published in any form will not be considered. Please tell us in your cover letter if your submission is simultaneously being considered elsewhere, and let us know immediately if your work is accepted by another publication. Likewise, please notify us if any part of your submission is included in a book already accepted by a publisher, and include the anticipated date of publication.
Subscribers can submit for $3 during our general submissions period. Online submissions should be sent to our Submittable account; each submission requires a $3 processing fee.
